Morris County Dog Park Closed For a Few More Weeks

We have been informed by the Morris County Park Commission that muddy conditions held up dog park repairs in late winter. Repair activities are expected to take approximately three weeks to complete and the dog park should open shortly after that.  The items being addressed at this time include:

  • parking lot expansion;
  • application of crushed stone in high use areas; and
  • re-seeding.

In the meantime, enjoy the Morris County Dog Park at Lewis Morris Park.  Additionally, you can also get some excersize and take an on-leash hike with your dog in one of Morris County’s parks.  They have many great hiking trails.  See http://www.morrisparks.net/ for more information.

Do not forget what this winter was like.

2011-02-27 Central Dog Park in the Melt

The last Sunday of February proved to be a much nicer day than yesterday as yesterday’s ice was turning to today’s slush.  Getting into the dog park was a muddy mess.  It’s what we all expected a few months ago thinking about the snow covering the dirt and we got it!  Not a good time to show up to the dog park without boots.  Just a suggestion if you plan on showing up in the next few days.

It was a tough day at the dog park for Scraps and especially Rags.  Rags and a tough little black dog named Addie got into a pretty fierce melee.  This wasn’t the first time they got into it like this so we have to watch out for that dog in the future.  Additionally, a new dog named Princess, a small scruffy little white dog also got into with Rags.  Then when we separated them, a Shepard named Bing started getting all riled up against both Scraps and Rags.  It was a tough time in the little dog park.

Bing and Princess were new to the park and blog, so I guess welcome to the two of them.  We also had a Sophie and Sophia, I think Sophia was the fluffy blackish-grey dog.  Finally we also had Leroy a dark brown Dachshund Toy-Poodle mix.  Welcome to all of them.

Though the schoolyard was a dog-eat-dog world, the skies outside were mostly sunny.  With the help of the sun I took some good action photographs, so check them out.

2011-02-26 Central Dog Park on the Ice

With a few warm wet days earlier in the week, the winter’s heavy base of snow was finally yielding to the sun, grass and mud.  What was left on the dog park’s surface was a very slick ice, which at times was treacherous to navigate.  It wasn’t the most inviting environment, but the temperatures in the upper 30’s and a strong sun, Scraps and Rags were due for some dog park action.

There were only a handful of dogs so we first hung out in the large dog park.  We met several new dogs to the blog including Buster, a jet black Briard, which is a French sheep herding dog.  He was fun and doofie.  We also met Babe the ball chasing light-colored Jack Russell/Yorkie mix.  Then there was Babe’s brother Homer, who was a very stocky Jack Russell.  He was funny in that he walked a lap or two around the park by himself , like an old man, and then joined his sister and mother when he was done.  Marlie was a Golden that we may have met before, or not as MarlieGold.  We welcome all these new dog to the dog blog.  Spring is just around the corner and we look forward to welcoming a whole new crop of puppies.

While today there weren’t a lot of dogs at the park, the ice made for a interesting visit and the sunlight enabled me to get many good, well-lit photos of the dogs as they would slip and slide, so check them out.  They were active and having fun.

2011-02-13 Central Dog Park on a Sunny Sunday Afternoon in the Snow

This Sunday was a much nicer day than yesterday.  It was sunnier, warmer and the snow was softer on the dogs’ paws.  This brought out lots of dogs including my beloved Scraps and Rags.  We first went to the small dog park where we played with many of the same dogs we saw yesterday.

I guess lots of the dogs have cabin fever and the warm sun got them excited.   With the bright sun and the playful dogs I was able to get many good action photos.  There was a lot of playing and running in the small dog park where about 10 dogs came out to play.  Later in the large dog park, there were mainly big dogs and they were also playing hard.

New to the dog park blog were a pair of giant Irish Wolf Hounds Petey and Katie.   There was also a brown bodied Pit-bull with a bright white face named Rocky who was getting picked on by the much smaller yet more tenacious Forrest, the Jack Russell.  We’ll refer to Rocky as RockyBrown.  Finally, in the small dog park we met a small Pit-bull like tan dog named Nigel.  For some reason, Nigel always gets bit so his Mom was fearing Rags may attack him.  It never happened.
